New computer won't run Ubuntu GUI

I have a new computer that doesn't seem to want to run the Ubuntu GUI. It is built with an MSI motherboard with built-in graphics, the ATI Radeon HD 3300 graphics hardware. GPU-Z, running under windows, says that the driver is atiumdag 8.14.10.0678/Win7. I didn't think that this had anything to do with nVidia drivers or hardware, but maybe I'm wrong. Can anyone give me an idea as to why this wouldn't run Ubuntu 8.04?

Thanks,
Mark

I just installed a new mobo in my Hardinge lathe and it would not work with 8.04 from the LiveCD. I downloaded Ubuntu 8.04.4 and loaded that. Then installed EMC and the real time kernel. Then I deleted the std kernel so it would boot to the proper one.

some info here

Thanks for the help, but I was hoping to be able to try this without permanently installing it yet. Would anyone know why the LiveCD version wouldn't work when the permanent installation does?

Thanks again,
Mark

Since I can't get this to boot from the LiveCD disk, can someone tell me where I can find instructions on how to set my computer up for dual booting between Windows 7 and Ubuntu 8.04 with Emc2?

Thanks,
Mark

You can download and burn the Ubuntu 8.04.4 LiveCD and test that Ubuntu will work.

John,
I've done that and the CD that I burned runs on other computers just fine. But it doesn't run on my new computer and I can't figure out why not. It should. Do you know of a place where I can get an image of Ubuntu 8.04 without Emc2 that I can download and burn onto a CD to try? That might tell me something.
Thanks,
Mark

Mark,

You don't understand, you need 8.04.4 not 8.04.0. The EMC LiveCD uses 8.04.0. Go to ubuntu.com to download the LiveCD with the latest version of Ubuntu which is 8.04.4

Then try booting from that CD.

Okay, I'm downloading that even as I type. Is it then possible to create a LiveCD that has Ubuntu 8.04.4 and Emc2 on it? Can I boot with 8.04.4, install Emc2, and then somehow save that configuration away and burn it on a boot-able CD that will run without modifying my computer (don't want much, do I)?

Okay. My new computer boots just fine with ver. 8.04.4. Is there a way to get a LiveCD with 8.04.4 AND Emc2 on it?

If you can't start the Live USB system from a running Ubuntu Live CD ... USB key stick installs are screwed -- the desktop won't appear when you login. ..... Do not forget to check if the computer you are going to use the drive on ... UNetbootin automates this task by providing a GUI to create.
