What is the best way to set up a new system with the 7i76e?

can i use the Linuxcnc image or do i have to install another linux with a special Kernel?
what is the easiest way? i have two machines running with the 5i20. this was easy because i used the image to set up the computer and the pncconf to create a working axis configuration.

regards

Peter

Take it from me who found out the hard way just before this fantastic tutorial existed, start here and install the required preemptive kernel for your 7i76e.
forum.linuxcnc.org/9-installing-linuxcnc...-or-deb?limitstart=0

I also found you need 64 bit hardware and OS.

what is the reason for the preemptive kernel? will the linuxcnc ISO in the future change to this kernel also?

Its required for the Mesa ethernet hardware. Others may have a more correct technical response but in short you need it to unlock all of the wonderful features of the 7i76e hardware.

will the linuxcnc ISO in the future change to this kernel also?

Probably not but the developers of LinuxCNC may do something. It might sound funny for open source software but the licensing becomes an issue if you bundle other software with a Linux distribution. Some distros won't allow Linuxcnc to build an ISO like they have currently.

The official way to get the preemptive kernel is documented under heading 7.1 here but be prepared for lots of driver issues if you are using modern hardware. This is what forced me to install Mint on my USFF PC that fits in the palm of your hand. (Gigabyte Brix with J1900 cpu).

i ordered this mini pc:
www.gearbest.com/tv-box-mini-pc/pp_590406.html

i'll try to install linux on this little thing. this would be a very small solution together with the 7i76e.

i've installed debian 7 as described here (linuxcnc.org/docs/2.7/html/getting-start...th_preempt_rt_kernel)

i use a d945gclf2 dual core atom (330?) board. i used this before with older linuxcnc versions. the max jitter was below 15000, now it is betwen 40000 and 50000?!

is this a problem with the RT kernel and the 7176e?

Yes, thats expected. You are not running a base thread so that will be OK. PCW has said he's run the ethernet cards with 120 usec latency without any problems. My latency would be higher than yours...

Provided you have a second network card or a wifi card, yes you can.

The USFF PC's have very bad latency if you use their built-in wifi but its fine if you use a USB wifi dongle (which is what I do).
