Hello,

I am updating an old  cnc machine to use it with linux cnc. For this I want to use a mesa 7i96 board.
My spindle is currently connected by a Commander Sk which is to act as a speed controller.
Then, for communication with the computer, the Commander is connected to a relay card by five wires in a cable (the cable is connected to the card via an RS232 connector). The mesa card will take the place of this card.

My problem is this: I have 5 wires for Commander-mesa communication and I don't understand how to connect them to the Mesa card. If I understand correctly, it's on the encoder connectors, with one on 5v and another on GND.
Can you help me with the others, please?

For your information, here are the commander's connections :
- 24Vdc output100mA
- Digital I/O or pulse output 10KHz or PWM output
- Digital output
- 0V commun
- Analog input 0-10V

Do you have link to the manual for the spindle driver?

Those pins look like a conventional VFD connection set, with an additional speed pulse feedback.

The Commander SK is from Control Techniques:
acim.nidec.com/drives/control-techniques...perseded/commandersk

A manual ca be found here: inverterdrive.com/file/commander-sk-start-up-guide

Unfortunately the 7i96 doesn't have a spindle analogue output. It might be possible to control the drive with Modbus using the RS422 connector on the 7i96.

Alternatively, the drive has an e-pot mode where two digital inputs can be used for increase/decrease speed control. Combined with the speed feedback this mode could be linked to HAL logic (PID?) to control the speed with three digital outputs.

Concerning the commander Sk I have also that : nicontrols.com/pub/media/pdfs/ctskbrochure.pdf

So, if I understand right I've chosen the wrong mesa card?

For me, the commander has just the e-pot role that you write (and a coolant control but it's different)
In addition, looking at the cable used, I also think that the electronic system already has a moldbus between the current card and the VFD (Sk commander).

Here are some pictures of the connections.
On the commander they are T1, T2, B2, B3 and B5
On the card it's the Analog connector

Do you have the 7i96 or 7i96S?
The latter has a spindle control.

Modbus would be plugged into the RS485 connector.

I bought the card last Monday. Since I started, I use the following manual: www.mesanet.com/pdf/parallel/7i96sman.pdf
Yes, I saw the spindle connectors on TB2 line.
But my spindle voltage (220V star) is higher than what the card can give. Or can these connectors communicate with the commander ?
 andypughBut if I use the modbus protocol with the RS485 connector (so an ethernet cable), my computer will no longer be able to communicate with the card ?
Maybe, I can use the 25pin connector for that ? Sorry for my ignorance, I started in this field

This would be my guess, assuming B4 is programmed for FWD
and B5 is programmed fro REV:

7I96S TB2.22 --> VFD T1 0V
7I96S TB2.23 --> VFD T2 A1
7I96S TB2.24 --> VFD T3 +10V

7I96S TB3.22 --> VFD B2 +24V
7I96S TB3.21 --> VFD B4 FWD?
7I96S TB3.24 --> VFD B2 +24V
7I96S TB3.23 --> VFD B5 REV?

with the 7i96S you would usually use the electronic potentiometer on TB2 (pins 22,23,24) to the spindle drive analog 0..10V input (T1,T2,T3)

Seems to me you need to do some reading before attempting anything.
Most importantly for now, be very careful when asking questions to give us precise info, like that single S is very important.
Mesa 7i96S has spindle control, that does in no way shape or form imply that you can wire a 3 phase motor directly to it, it means it has the means to control a VFD that will in turn control the spindle motor. You need a VFD or a servo drive to run a spindle.
Same for RS485, it uses 2 wires and GND, not related to network ethernet cable that has 8 wires and uses 4.
Feel absolutely free to ask as many questions as you like/need, there are plenty of us here willing to help whenever and however we can.
