Hi i have a rather old laptop which i plan on using with emc2. I was wondering if anyone can recomend a small footprint linux. Basically i dont want it to have all the services under the sun. I just want it to run EMC2
I have used Suse before but it is just way to heavy
Cheers

what is small, what is old ?
The simplest way to run EMC is using ubuntu. The smallest ubuntu is probably xubuntu.
I run EMC 2.3.4-1 with xubuntu 8.04 on a probably 5 years old dell laptop, 1 GHz, 256 MB, 10 GB disk.
Its not exciting, but its ok.
Latency is ok after switching off SMI.

Will EMC2 run better if I use xbuntu O/S on a older single core Atom mobo (D945GCLF)?

You mean if it runs better with xubuntu, versus standard ubuntu ?
well, in terms of latency, there is no difference. This means the performance of your machine is the same.
If your board has less than 0.5 G memory, you probably will have a better feeling of fluent interaction with you computer.

Gerd,
Thank you for you attention, appreciate your answer.

You understand my question concisely.

I'm not very well verse with these stuff so I beef up 2 Gb ram onboard, I recon with this size ram, the EMC would not complain about sharing memory with graphics or anything else ;) and the mobo is a EMC2 dedicated, no LAN, no wireless, noprinter, no HDD, just thumbdrive, monitor, keyboard & a mouse.... bare minimum.

"Fluent interaction" with the computer will be a great reason to have a go at Xubuntu, its nice to have especially when under pressure to do things on the fly. :cheer:

Will try this Xubuntu out once I can find time for it.

Thanks

Ken

With 2 GB of RAM any flavour of Ubuntu will work fine. Just be sure to use 8.04 Hardy Heron. Simlest way of insdtallation is to use the EMC live CD.
