Yuck thats pretty ugly.
If you have a way to disable the spindle,
it should be possible using the scale component

Hello,
I'm relatively new to Mesa Cards and LinuxCNC so I'd appreciate any help. I'm trying to resolve issues setting up the 5i25 + 7i76 boards for spindle control and encoder feedback. I've put together a HAL and INI files using both PNCconfig and manually updating the files based on what I've been able to find on the forums here. The encoders are single ended, A, B, and Index on a 100 count pulse wheel. I've attached below the error message I receive from LinuxCNC when I try to run. Corresponding HAL and INI files are also attached below.

You have a typo in the HAL file.
The error is

HAL: ERROR: function 'abs.spindle_output' not found


caused by

loadrt abs names=abs.spindle,abs,spindle_out


You are loading three abs components: abs.spindle, abs, spindle_out
I think you want
loadrt abs names=abs.spindle,abs.spindle_out
ie, a dot not a comma.

Actually no absolute component is needed at all

the spindle out voltage should be controlled by these statements:

net spindle-vel-cmd-rpm-abs => hm2_5i25.0.7i76.0.0.spinout
net motion.spindle-on => hm2_5i25.0.7i76.0.0.spinena
net spindle-ccw => hm2_5i25.0.7i76.0.0.spindir
net spindle-vel-cmd-rpm-abs <= motion.spindle-speed-out-abs

Note that you are using a quite old version of pncconf (with many errors).
At the very minimum I would update to the latest version of LinuxCNC (2.7.8) and start again

Also you will get additional errors when you fix the current batch because you have some power
issue that is preventing the 7I76s field I/O section from running (missing field power?)

OK,
I've updated LinuxCNC to 2.7.8 from 2.7.0 and rerun PNCconfig to generate new HAL and INI files. I no longer have any LinuxCNC launch errors.

I currently only have A, B, and Index encoders wired single ended onto the 7i76 board for the spindle. Do I need to have SPINENA+, and SPINENA- wired before I can see spindle speed feedback within LinuxCNC and get an Spindle Output signal from the spindle controller? (Currently there is no speed spindle speed display visible anywhere within LinuxCNC). If so, do I simply jumper SPINENA+ (+6V) to Spindle+ and SPINENA- (0V) to Ground? If I wanted to enable the spindle by pulling to ground, how do I wire that onto the 7i76 and what do I need to change on my HAL file?

I appreciate the assistance.

No. Those outputs are provided for the purpose of turning the spindle drive on and off.

Perhaps surprisingly there is no spindle speed display built in to the Axis Gui.

For a temporary display of spindle speed (in revs per second) you can open a halmeter and look at (typically) motion.spindle.speed-in or (the signal source) hm2_5i25.0.encoder.0.velocity

To have a permanent spindle speed display you can add a PyVCP or GladeVCP panel to the GUI.

Oh, I see. SPINENA+ and SPINENA- are output signals for activating and deactivating the Spindle Drive. (Please correct me if I'm wrong.) What button and/or function in LinuxCNC activates this signal?

I also can't vary the Spindle Out signal through LinuxCNC. It seems to be stuck at 0V despite me trying to increase and decrease the spindle speed via LinuxCNC. Any idea what may be causing this?

To get an output from the 7I76 analog spindle output, (7I76 SPINDLE OUT) you need

1. +5VDC to +15VDC on SPINDLE+, VDC common on SPINDLE-
2. hm2_5i25.0.7i76.0.0.spinena must be "true"
3. hm2_5i25.0.7i76.0.0.spinout must be set to some detectable percentage of hm2_5i25.0.7i76.0.0.spinout-scalemax
4. hm2_5i25.0.7i76.0.0.spinout-maxlim and hm2_5i25.0.7i76.0.0.spinout-minlim must be set so they are not bounding
hm2_5i25.0.7i76.0.0.spinout to a small number

For the encoders, I've build a separate circuit for the spindle encoder to clean up the signals from the optical sensors. I have the A, B, and Index signals (0V to 12V) running through a comparator triggered at 50% maximum amplitude. After the comparator, the square wave signal runs through a voltage divider to bring it down to 5V. The signal from my board produces a clean square wave running between 0V and 5V. I've noticed that after I connect my board to the 7i76 input pins for A, B, and Index, the square wave signal no longer pulls down to 0V. Instead, the signal oscillates between 2.5V (roughly) and 5V. Is this typical or am I doing something incorrectly that's not allowing me see any spindle speed values on PNCconf?

Also, I still can't figure out why I can't get an output on the 7i76 for the Spindle speed controller. I've attached a photo of my 7i76 wiring connections. I might be doing something obviously wrong but I'm at a loss right now.

PCW, in your last post, you mentioned "2. hm2_5i25.0.7i76.0.0.spinena must be "true"". Does that mean I need to wire +6V to SPINENA or is that set to "true" programmatically?

hm2_5i25.0.7i76.0.0.spinena is a hal signal that must be true for the spindle analog output to be enabled
You can check this (and all the other signals in my list) with halmeter or "watch"

DO NOT connect external power to the SPINDLE ENA pins, these pins are connections to a
OPTO coupler output switch designed for enabling you spindle motor drive, that is SPINDLE ENA+ and SPINDLE ENA- are open circuit until linuxcnc is running and the hal pin hm2_5i25.0.7i76.0.0.spinena is asserted and then they are a
low resistance closed circuit. If you apply non current limited power directly to these outputs, you will damage the optocoupler

The likely reason that you do not have full swing on the 7I76 encoder inputs is because the inputs have 2K pullups
and your divider network is too high resistance to drive this to ground
