Emotional terminal decided to ignore some files. Please help me fix it. What did i do wrong? Below is what to terminal ouput was.
I had to delete almost all the HTTP so the forum didn't think they were links.
elroy@elroy-Lenovo-V570:~$ sudo apt-get update

You have the wrong entry in the sources, it should be buildbot.linuxcnc.org/dists/precise/2.7-rt , best if you copy and paste from here:
Buildbot.linuxcnc.org

I dont quit check the web page you sent me to. I did the following.
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver hkp://keys.gnupg.net --recv-key E0EE663E
sudo add-apt-repository "deb buildbot.linuxcnc.org/ precise 2.7-sim"
when i update it just shows the failed RTAI file. i decided i what the real time one instead.
What does DEB mean? What do they mean by adding it to your stanza? how do I add it to my stanza?
what is the second line for "deb-src buildbot.linuxcnc.org/ precise 2.7-sim"? What does SRC mean? I have been reading on line to try and understand it all but I have a lot to learn as i am a newbie.

Now you entered sources for sim and you are trying to install rtai version?!?
What versioan are you trying to instal?
Try this tutorial, it has everything in one place
forum.linuxcnc.org/9-installing-linuxcnc...h-rip-install-or-deb
If you want to have only sim, you do not need rtai, even if you want to control actual machines with it, if it has no parallel port, you still do not need rtai.
For sim only, you do not need any of the rt kernels, plain generic one will do.
For machine control on laptops through network card or ethernet, you need the preempt-rt kernel.

Wow I wrote my last response when i was still half a sleep. Sorry.

I did not know that linux Mint was compatible with linuxcnc. I never saw it on the compatibility list under downloads. Is mint a better system? Everything I have read about it is that it got a bad rap but was backwards compatible with the old ubuntu systems but still up to date. Should i switch from Precise to Mint? if so why?

If you own a fast laptop, yes definitely swith to mint.
Mint bad rep??? Never heard of it, quite the contrary, it is the best linux distro since ubuntu 10.04, i have it on at least 7 computers and 4 other machines i have built.
Use that tutorial as it makes installing linuxcnc enjoyable.

Tom

So recap. If was a massive failure in the download instructions not to included Mint because of the implied that it is compatible and superior to all others.

Can you give me any data or references on how to hook up my cnc through Ethernet?

I don't think there was a failure in the instructions. There are a number of licensing issues to bundle LinuxCNC with a version of Linux.
The move by quite a number of people recently to Mint has been a direct result of the tutorial that was linked to above and becasue it has much better driver support than Debian for new hardware, often becasue people wanted to use Mesa ethernet hardware that requires the preemptive kernel.

To connect to your CNC machine via ethernet you really need to be using one of the Mesa cards. Probably a 7i76e for stepper systems or a 7i77e for servo systems would be a good place to start. This then means as stated above, you need the preemptive realtime kernel which has never been distributed by a LinuxCNC .ISO so a more manual install is required. This requirement was why after several failures using the Debian OS due to lack of driver support, I migrated to Mint before the tutorial was written.

A minor correction, there is no 7i77E, but 7i92 with 7i77 or other combinations.
If there is, somehow i did not see it.
Back on topic, you can use BigJT tutorial for installing Linuxcnc on Mint 17.2 and 17.3 or use Cncnoob's tutorial for Mint 18.1, preferable the latter as most of us in the forum already use it.
It takes about 20 minutes to install Mint ( well most Linux distributions take 20 minutes max ), another 1 to 2 hours for the Linuxcnc compile and install and there is no failure there, as that is a fully covered tutorial.
