Hi. I am very new to all this. I am building myself a small lathe to run on Linuxcnc. I have found so much information on here about panels etc but I am stuck. I am trying to find out how to have a panel with macros that can do basic things like turning, parting, boring etc. I have found lots of info but cannot find one that is facing with radius at edge. Sometimes we need to turn a part that has radius at bottom or edge of shaft. Please help. I have been an engineer for many years but this software is all new to me. I am used to using a conversational lathe on a Siemens control panel.

I have a set of macros here:

The turning and boring macros offer a radius run-out, but the facing macro doesn't.
Depending on the quantity of parts you can use the facing macro then the radius macro. They both hold their values between runs, so you can just switch tabs and run that operation.
Alterantively you could add a box for radius to the facing operation tab and modify the G-code that it calls. If you want to do that I can help with more detailed instructions.

Excellent. I might be doing this very wrong, but I copied your zip file to my config folder and opened with linuxcnc, it came up with an error about lathe:hal:5 exit value:1. I am really confused.

Odd, it works for me.
Can you paste the exact error message?
I am on the train at the moment, so can't see what line 5 of lathe.hal says. It may be trying to access a non-existent parallel port. But I thought it was a simulator configuration.

Hi. I really appreciate the help. Mentioning the parallel port may be it. I built a new PC just for my lathe but the motherboard did not come with a parallel port, so I bought a PCI one. I never even checked if it was recognised as I assumed, like Windows, it would just work. I will go to the workshop today and see if it is listed in my drivers and let you know.

I think I might see the problem.
Which version of the config did you download? Was it from the first post or the nearly-last?
The nearly-last one is for the Touchy interface, and is also built for the development version of LinuxCNC which uses a different INI file format.
Which user interface do you intend to use? Do you have a currently-working LinuxCNC config for the lathe?

Hi Andy,
Right. Just checked my PC and the parallel card shows up in lshw and also in hwinfo. The version of Linuxcnc is V2.7.8, the latest as I reinstalled it on Thursday. I can run all the example configs that it comes with. As for my interface, I bought 3 Nema27 motors with drivers and the parallel breakout board from a UK Ebay shop who specialise in robotics etc. I have no idea what make it is but they say it is compatible with both Mach3 and EMC (LinuxCnc). I am planning on using it on a Waco lathe (500mm between centers) using mouse and keyboard. I use a full size XYZ CNC lathe at work with Seimens control but always wanted to build my own - I have a customer requiring small parts which this would be ideal.

With a keyboard and mouse you probably want to use the version of the
config that is here
Just extract it to your configs directory and try running it.
(It uses Axis, but that is fairly easy to change)
