Note, W2 sets connector P3's 5V power option, not W3

Thanks Peter for the note. I have looked back and don't seem to see where W3 was mentioned

I just bought the same kit, so here is a bit of feedback...

Ok I purchased these two cards together so I assume that it has been flashed with the correct firmware.

Yes, one think funny though, is that by default the 7i76 is set to source 5v from the PCI card, but the 6i25 is set to not send it to the break-out board ;)
So whatever your choice is, you need to change a jumper.

I am only using one 7i76 but I don't see in the Pncconfig the option to use just one card it seems to say 5i35 x 2 7i76 would this be ok for an initial setup?

The 6i25 is just a 5i25 with a PCIe to PCI bridge, so for LinuxCNC it only sees a 5i35 and this is OK.

It would make sense to have the default jumper positions on the 5i25/6i25 be in the ground position rather than the 5v source. It is the safest way to have it wrong.

Yes, and it is the case ;)

(My remark was that he 7i76 on the contrary expects by default to get 5v from the [56]i25 -- so whatever your choice is you will have to change the one or the other)

Good to know the 6i25 is not set for 5v to P3 out of the box. When I ship them I'll make sure they are set correctly and the label lists the jumper positions in addition to the loaded firmware.

Ok so on conclusion for us newbies what are the recommended jumper settings for the 5i25 with 7i76 using field power at 24V (ie do you use the 5V pwr from the 5i25) ? As reading all the posts it is ambiguous to me.

Thanks

You are mixing things...

24V (or whatever your decide) is for the field power.

But you also need power for the step/dir signals to your drives, in principle 5V. So the choice is between:
  • Getting the 5V from your computer (changing the 6i25 jumper to provide 5V)
  • Providing yourself 5V from another power source directly to the 7i76 (changing the 7i76 jumper to isolate the 5V)

I use 24V for field, and take the 5V from my 6i25, to avoid an additional PSU
