Realtime Kernal Required

Hello all,

Sorry, this is probably an easy question:

I just installed EMC and rebooted my computer. Now, when I try to run the program I get the following message pop up:

"EMC2 required the real-time kernal 2.6.24-16-rtai to run. Before running EMC2, reboot and choose this kernel at the boot menu."

How do I do this? This is really my first time interacting with Linux.

Thank you for any help!

I would bet you did an update of ubuntu after installing EMC. That would have added different kernels. EMC needs to use the rtai kernel.
This will happen every time an Ubuntu update includes a new kernel image.

When starting the computer you should see text that mentions the grub menu (like push escape button to enter the grub menu)
get to this grub menu and using the arrow keys choose the rtai kernal and push enter.
Now you have loaded the proper kernel and EMC should be happy.

To make Ubuntu always load the rtai kernel involves using sudo privileges to edit grub's menu.lst file.
I will let someone else explain that.

Hope that helps!

Thank you very much! It works now :>

If anyone can tell me, or where I might be able to find instructions, on how to change the system to start with this kernal each time, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks again!

The first of all!
After the FIRST installing ubuntu+emc type the next command
dpkg -l | grep linux-image
You will see the right name of RTAI linux omage name
The second command you nedd to do:
sudo aptitude hold linux-image-blblbl-rtai016.24
linux-image-blblbl-rtai016.24 - it is the right name of you current RTAI linux image
That's all.
And the third command
sudo aptitude update
The forth commans
sudo aptitude safe-upgrade.

Vu a la!
All will be work and you will never will be prompt to install new image...

Thanks for the fast reply but I am not sure I am getting the first command correct as nothing happens and also should I be entering it inside a terminal
