The important error is in there (just at the end):

[drm:drm_lock_take] *ERROR* 3 holds heavyweight lock

It seems that 3D operation locks your X-server. (maybe Ctrl-Alt-backspace will save you from completely rebooting the next time).
Try running glxgears or some similar 3D app, which should prove that it's not AXIS related.

I would probably attempt to switch video drivers.

Alex

Alex (and John),

Thanks, I changed drivers and it is now working. I changed to the vesa driver (even though the vesa driver wouldn't work on my other box).

For me the suggestion to try tkemc identified the problem as relating to "axis" as opposed to "emc2" or "rtai". I was not suggesting that the problem was in "axis" itself because I knew that it worked but rather how my system functioned with it under 8.04 versus 6.06. That change (using tkemc instead of axis) fairly clearly pointed to a video problem. I was afraid that meant finding yet another video card, but happily just changing the driver solved the problem.

Alex, I saw the lock message but didn't know what it was telling me.

Thanks again to both of you.
Alan
