I installed 2.3.1 using the instructions provided in INSTALL on my SUSE 11.1. When I run emc from root terminal wiindow, it closes when I choose any of the simulators except mini.

this is the error:-

EMC2 - 2.3.1
Machine configuration directory is '/usr/local/share/doc/emc2/examples/sample-configs/sim'
Machine configuration file is 'axis.ini'
Starting EMC2...
axis_manualtoolchange.hal:1: execv(hal_manualtoolchange) failed
axis_manualtoolchange.hal:1: hal_manualtoolchange exited without becoming ready
Shutting down and cleaning up EMC2...
Cleanup done
EMC terminated with an error. You can find more information in the log:
/root/emc_debug.txt
and
/root/emc_print.txt
as well as in the output of the shell command 'dmesg' and in the terminal

I would like to run axis as simulator so that i can get to know it better on my home pc, and use the real time version at my cnc plasma outside in the shed.
any ideas.

Shane,

I don't have a clue about the SUSE stuff but you might just boot from the LiveCD and play with the sims that way.

I also have a CNC plasma cutter that I built and run with EMC2. For plasma cutting it is useful to program G64 Px.xxx to enable the naive cam detector for artsy fartsy stuff with lots of small arcs and lines. Take a look in the User Manual in the User Concepts chapter to better understand EMC's trajectory control.

sorry guys, I meant to display this file as well:-

emc_print.txt
RUN_IN_PLACE=no
EMC2_DIR=
EMC2_BIN_DIR=/usr/local/bin
EMC2_TCL_DIR=/usr/local/share/emc/tcl
EMC2_SCRIPT_DIR=
EMC2_RTLIB_DIR=/usr/local/lib/emc2/modules
EMC2_CONFIG_DIR=
EMC2_LANG_DIR=/usr/local/share/emc/tcl/msgs
INIVAR=inivar
HALCMD=halcmd
EMC2_EMCSH=emcsh
EMC2_IOSH=iosh
INIFILE=/usr/local/share/doc/emc2/examples/sample-configs/sim/axis.ini
PARAMETER_FILE=sim.var
EMCMOT=motmod
EMCIO=io
TASK=milltask
HALUI=halui
DISPLAY=axis
NML_FILE=emc.nml
Starting EMC2 server program: emcsvr
Loading Real Time OS, RTAPI, and HAL_LIB modules
Starting EMC2 IO program: io
Starting HAL User Interface program: halui
Killing task emcsvr, PID=11816
Removing HAL_LIB, RTAPI, and Real Time OS modules
Removing NML shared memory segments

and here is "emc_debug.txt"
11816
PID TTY STAT TIME COMMAND

Unloading hal components

Is it possible to tell if I -

1. have installed correctly
2. am using correct run command, ie running "emc" in "/usr/share/emc2-2.3.1/scripts" from root console

I know a little about linux and cnc, but I suspect some idiosyncrasy with emc loader here maybe, then again SUSE 11.1 could be the culprit.

I could use the boot cd, but I sit in front of the PC and alternate between SUSE and XP a lot, having to load another OS could be a little awkward, after I have set everything up to be a comfortable dual purpose working environment.

I have all my drawings, cad, cam, internet, partitions, mount points etc set up in SUSE, and in a spare moment, I like just like to experiment with emc here at the home PC, and take any new knowledge, ideas, files, etc it down to the workshop realtime PC.
