For the life of me i cant seem to find in this detail... my parallel port. if you can please point it out to me.

All I am trying to do is see if Ubuntu 10.04 Live cd ( installed ) recognizes my parallel port. YES IT IS BIOS ENABLED! :-D

I am trying to find this because i am getting not response from my mill. Emc2 is setup and works fine and I know my machine works; but there seems to be no communication / movement.

Ruled out all connections and hardware faults by diagnosis and good old trial and error, so basically im drawing down to the last few ideas (last being my new PP cable is faulty)

all help praised and appreciated

Many cheap parallel port cables don't have all the pins connected you may have one of those.

I "think" this is the onboard parallel port

do not see parallel ports. in this list ..
but is integrated or pci? if it is integrated is usually 0x0378 or 0x0278
if not then emc error. means that there is.

Take a look at the file /proc/ioports and see if anything called parport is listed in there.

After boot up open up a terminal and put

dmesg > boot.txt

then open the file and search for paraport.

or

dmesg|grep parport

you are correct john! spot on infact.

tired dmesg|grep parport as per one of your other posts and i get

:~$ dmesg|grep parport
[ 11.551600] parport_pc 00:07: reported by Plug and Play ACPI
[ 11.551671] parport0: PC-style at 0x378 (0x778), irq 7, dma 3 [PCSPP,TRISTATE,COMPAT,ECP,DMA]
[ 11.648233] lp0: using parport0 (interrupt-driven).
