LinuxCNC-RIO - RealtimeIO for LinuxCNC based on FPGA (ICE40 / ECP5)

Category: Computers and Hardware

@meister have you done any investigation on running the iceshield on a rpi5? it seems the spi and gpio hardware is different. I am unable to get a clock signal on pin 7, it seems like it was not a well supported feature. I used an rp2040 to generate a clock signal instead, wired to pin 7, and flashed using a pi4, and have the blinking light but I'm getting EMCMOT timeouts from linuxcnc. I suspect the SPI interface is different. It's definitely there, I have the expected /dev/spidev0.1, /dev/spidev0.0 devices. I'd love to use the pi5, it's MUCH faster and has better jitter.

I do not know why, but Tab Overview shows graphic again.
IO_TYPE is better to have back, please :-)

LinuxCNC-RIO - RealtimeIO for LinuxCNC based on FPGA (ICE40 / ECP5)

I give up on the portable Python....toolchain. It is easy to use the IDE.

It would be good to have the IO_TYPE back in the pin list and the graphic in the Tab Overview

Thanks tommylight I will have to look back at his channel . Last time I checked there it mainly had stuff from 4 or so
years ago. I wasn't sure if his tutorials were going to be relevant on V1.0.

LinuxCNC-RIO - RealtimeIO for LinuxCNC based on FPGA (ICE40 / ECP5)

As I have no hardware yet, I am wondering if it is good decision to remove IO_TYPE completely.

It was just my mistake because I have not realized that it can be set within your tool.

The IDE shows me in the Pin Report that all pins are on LVCMOS18 now.

THank you, it seems to work for me now with my config.
And I added the read all /write all and tested inputs and ooutputs, great :)

I think I put these 2 rows

loadusr -W lcec_conf ethercat-conf.xml
loadrt lcec

maybe too early in the file compared to my Mesa card? is it possible ?

Perfect, it works this way. thanks

By the way, I propose a small change in qt_vaismach.py
in the zooIn and zoomout functions add and subtract the value of self.near.

Now, with a big zoom, you have to really turn the mouse wheel to fully zoom in and then zoom out.

After such a change, it is much more pleasant, more linear operation.

Such a correction would also be useful in the main preview window, but I haven't found a solution for this..

LinuxCNC-RIO - RealtimeIO for LinuxCNC based on FPGA (ICE40 / ECP5)

Category: Computers and Hardware

I pulled the dev branch.
It creates the toolchains.json file and I added:

{
"gowin": "C:\\Gowin\\Gowin_V1.9.10.03_Education_x64\\IDE",
"diamond": "",
"vivado": "",
"quartus": "",
"icestorm": "",
"ise": ""
}

However, it does not compile. It gives me following error:

Der Befehl "make" ist entweder falsch geschrieben oder
konnte nicht gefunden werden.

Furthermore, the graphic in the tab Overview is completely gone.

Here is my very basic (1 axis with error starting Axis) config.
If you dont have a ECT drive then remove that from the xml and just configure a single drive in your Hal and it should start up.

So I just downloaded:

rpi-5-debian-bookworm-6.6.54-rt39-arm64-ext4-2024-11-06-2037_qtpyvcp_stable_networkmanager.img.xz

I tried to burn it with the Raspberry image burner and it gives me an error:

Input file is not a valid disk image.
File size 6700000000 bytes is not a multiple of 512.

Hello Richard,

I have the same issue with this image. I used the Raspberry Pi Imager 1.8.5 on the latest MacOS. I think it's not your setup.

Find Joko Engineering on youtube, he has some very good tutorials, watched him for literally 3 minutes and i was off designing machine parts. Having previous experience with 3D studio Max and LightWave helps but it also hindered me as i kept thinking " i know this"! :) Had to get rid of that "i know this" part to be able to move on.
I use it for machine parts, so far for 3D printing only, i will have to delve into the "path" territory soon.
Definitely, it is magnificent once you get past the quirks, then again all have quirks.
And the major issue with faces has been fixed quite good, appears to be better than most commercial solutions, but that is debatable.

There is a CAM version of Blender if you feel like stepping into the deep end, no idea if it is still being worked on. Blender is a monster! And it's free, despite huge offerings to buy them out.

Traj section in the ini file, velocities are much lower than in the display section, try setting those same as display section.

Now, after the first start of the generator, a file is created:

riocore/toolchains.json

there you can enter the paths to your toolchains, these are then transferred to the makefile.

under windows please note that backslashes must be double

so you do not need to add the toolchains to your enviroment variables

Now i am quickly getting out of my depth, :) It looks like you maybe missing the link to the XML file in your hal? as you are not showing the EK1100 in the list of Pins.

do you have something similar to
loadusr -W lcec_conf ethercat-conf.xml

You also seem to be missing the Readall / writeall for lcec can you post your hal?

In your xml? and when you start from the cmdline are you getting any errors?
