Upgrade advice for ooold system

My thoughts on "upgrade to latest version", apart from sounding like a "windows professional" it's not a thoughtful answer, unless there are known issues, like there was with the last 2.9.x updates.

It's not really helping someone just to tell them to upgrade. They have an issue and usually want a meaningful answer.
The user's hardware may not be up to the task of the latest kernel, software bloat etc.
There were some major changes from 2.7 to 2.8 that will affect jogging/mpg to begin with.
New features are good (mostly) but require a learning curve, which could be costly in a shop.
Regarding a machine that has no network connection, the biggest security issue is physical access, no security updates will help if someone steals your hardware, or you get an employee that has a little bit of knowledge.
So IMHO it may be best first to address the issue as first presented, asked more questions if you think an upgrade maybe the way forward, and make sure you let the user with the question know some of the issues that maybe involved with an upgrade.
Just a bit off topic, but many maybe shocked to know how many win3.11 or win95 boxes were still running as print/file servers in the mid 2000s in offices. Or even NetWare ;)

LinuxCNC-RIO - RealtimeIO for LinuxCNC based on FPGA (ICE40 / ECP5)

Category: Computers and Hardware

I have been tuning some steppers using the stepdir plugin and the quadencoder plugins as feedback. The tuning hasn't been working too well and I'm curious if it is possible to set the Stepgen into velocity mode? Thankyou!

No, I haven't changed anything.
Those are the servo's default settings.
I need to see where I can switch the servo from speed to position mode.

Why do you want to set a speed? Normally you set a position.

Addendum:
Something is wrong.
In the current configuration of the servos (factory settings), it is not possible to set a speed.
Is anyone else using the 6M60-400H2A1-M17?

Does the amplifier actually fault and if so do you actually know why it is faulting?

Sitting in the coffee shop having nothing else to do than posting rubbish half knowledge :-)

I think my problem is usually not the missing updates, but the forgotten details, due to lack of documentation. So maybe just update the documentation is already good.

I never connect my cnc machines to the internet (what for?).
I would leave the existing system completely untouched and create an independent newer backup system. (Takes time pressure away)

The hours you have to invest in the backup system is probably the same as fixing things once it stopped working. (bad wheather? unplug! ) :-)
I bought parallelport cards for cheap, they worked on newer, but still old hardware. (6-7 year old 2nd hand PC)

I would only update if there is a particular function that I want or need.
Never change running system.

you could use a PushButton (under the linuxcnc-HAL heading)

It makes a hal pin.
Don't forget to set the property:
pin_name and pin_type

Tommy,
Thanks for the reminder about the on-machine simulation, that works fine.

I was hoping I had missed something in Camotics or NCViewer, or there was another product available that I could run at the design stage away from the machine.

Well, this shows I need to install LinuxCNC Simulator on my desktop.

John.

If your desktop is a Windows machine, you can use Virtualbox to host linuxcnc on.

Real Time PREEMPT_RT Kernel Tuning including Networking

You might also want to disable IPv6 on the card, otherwise there are
some discovery packets sent. After the card is up, I use the following
command to turn of IPv6:

sysctl -w net.ipv6.conf.eth1.disable_ipv6=1

Thanks. It seems the simplest method is to add this to the GRUB command lineipv6.disable=1
