I'm retrofitting a Bridgeport V2XT. I've ordered a Mesa 7i92H and a 7i77 for the process. I have a Dell 780 with a core 2 duo E8400 and 4GB ram. I plan on putting a 120gb ssd in the machine and using it for my control pc.

My question is will this pc work for linuxcnc and some minor cad/cam work.

Yes. e8400 is very powerful cpu comparing to its age , faster than i3 desktop cpus first gen and i5 mobile cpus .I had my pc wired with plasma machine with the same specs , never had an issue , i used Aspire to draw and model things on it. These old pcs from Dell are rock solid , mine literally stayed on for days for lot of years and never had an issue with it. SSD and a non extra requiring power gpu is a MUST upgrade for this sistem.
Greetings.

I didn't state it but it also has a Radeon 3450 in the machine. Gonna need to get a dms-59 adapter though.

Is this gpu compatible with linuxcnc?

So I setup my computer today and these are the numbers I'm getting without running any complex programs. Are these pretty standard or are they higher than they should be given my hardware.

Dell 780 sff E8400, 4gb RAM, 250 GB SSD, Radeon 3450.

My numbers are running:
Servo Thread Max Interval 1074482 Max Jitter 74482
Base Thread Max Interval 132890 Max Jitter 107890

I you have a 7I92, you don't need a base thread
so you will get more realistic numbers if you run
the latency test with just the servo thread:

latency-test 1ms 1ms
or
latency-histogram --nobase --sbinsize 500

I assume you went through and turned off all the power saving, hyper threading, sleep state stuff, VM setting in BIOS? Also as PCW said redo jitter with servo thread only.

I had not modified the bios at all but I checked and didn't see much as far as power saving stuff.

I ran a "sudo stress-ng --cpu 4 --io 4 --vm 1 --vm-bytes 1G --timeout 60s --metrics-brief" while running a glxgears instance and got these results.
Servo thread Max Interval 1038562 Max Jitter 38892
Base Thread Max Interval 132662 Max Jitter 107662

I ran just the servo thread as PCW suggested running a glxgears and the same stress-ng and got these results.
Servo Thread(1ms): Max Interval 1046473 Max Jitter 46473

I'm guessing these numbers should be fine with the 7I92 and 7I77 cards to push this machine as fast as it should go without damaging things. But if I'm wrong please let me know maybe I have something setup incorrectly.
