kinematics with pushrod control

I need to set up a liquid gasket applicator. A simple xyz gantry would work, but would be bulky for the task. If I controlled it with a pushrod on xy, with the dispenser hung on a pivot at the top, the system could be lightweight and won't need as much rigidity since I won't be moving as all the weight. (My first thought was rc servos, which I have used elsewhere successfully but with steppers I don't have to figure out the pulsing in linuxcnc)

So, can the kinematics be set up to handle the arcs of the pushrod control, but still provide cartesian positioning?

Thanks

As long as the forwards and backwards transformations from joints to cartesian can be calculated, then yes.
