If I close and restart linuxcnc I get a parport not ready error. See file.

The only way to recover from this error is to reboot my machine.

I am running version 2.5 and two parallel ports, one internal and one on a second plug is card. My machine is an older dell Pentium 4.

That's not normal.

It seems like something is not letting go of the parport.

If you do a
lsmod | grep par
before starting LinuxCNC, during LinuxCNC running and after exiting LinuxCNC do you see anything suspicious?

Hi. Did you find an answer for this?

I am new to LinuxCNC and have loaded version 2.5.0 onto an IBM thinkpad laptop. Its driving the steppers okay but after every run of LinuxCNC or Stepconf I have to reboot the computer if I want to run LinuxCNC or Stepconf again.

I am using the live Ubuntu 10.04 CD as my IBM thinkpad does not have a DVD reader.

MPC.

2.5.0 is now very old. (1st April 2012).
You should be able to update LinuxCNC to the latest version (2.7.12) without updating the operating system by following the instructions here:
wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?UpdatingTo2.6
then
linuxcnc.org/docs/2.7/html/getting-start...dating-linuxcnc.html
(Pay special attention to section 3.2 as this might have a direct bearing on your issue)
