or maybe ill just be lazy and put a relay on one of the outputs.

Thats what I did! The relay switches 5V stolen from one of my stepgens to the enable button to disable the drives when in estop

i changed it to 3 and i also added
setp hm2_5i25.0.gpio.007.is_output true
it flip flopped which pins are 5v and grnd on the 3rd axis but it does not turn io7 on and off when the machine on/off is toggled.
is there anything else i need to add?

Really late to the party here, but Michael at emco confirmed my notion that the drive enable signal is actually designed to be 24v, but it somehow works with only 5. They were nice enough to send me all of the schematics for the A01 version of this setup and the drive enable is part of a safety circuit that runs through x110 and x121 of the old AC95

Why don't you just use an output to energize relay and put "net machine-is-on " in custom.hal and wire that relay to pass whatever voltage your drivers need for enable? then move on to the next step.
