Hi , I can notice this is an old post. But I can not find more information related. I'm having the same issue.
Did you have any luck solving this error. Its was just a matter of changing the order in the binaries ?
Sorry I'm new to Linux, so any help is welcome.
I made a fresh installation of Debian Wheezy thru the iso images. Then update and install the Preempt - Rt Kernel.
But I am not able to go father.
Thanks.

After you install the Preempt -RT kernel, you will need to re boot into that new kernel (might need to modify and update grub.)
Then you will need to change the repos for Linuxcnc from the RTAI to the Preempt-RT versions.
by adding this to the repo list, and unchecking the old Linunxcnc repo. Then, update. (I usually do all this from Synaptic.)

Many thanks for you soon answers. I have tried what you had mention, but know I'm getting a message : malformed line 17 in source list. First I got the message : repositories can not be downloaded or files are missing. Now with this error as soon as I hit ok or close the dialog the Windows is closed and can not perform any changes. If I open the repositories again the error message pops up.
Any ideas ? How do I go back to previous state ? Thanks.

That just means that there is something wrong with the repo line.
Try taking out some of the extra spaces between deb and http
If that doesn't work, you can put it back by deleting the bad repo line(s) and replacing or re-checking the old ones.

Yes there is. Using a text editor with root privileges (sudo ...) edit the file
/etc/apt/sources.list
/etc/apt/sources.list

Hi Todd , I appreciate your help , but the learning curve for me has been a little bit slow.
I have been out for a while , but now I'm back trying to fix the installation.
Would you please tell me how to set root privileges ? I opened the text editor , but can not change the file.
Was considering a new installation , but I have to learn so I become familiar with Devian.
Thanks,

You can do this by launching the editor from a terminal:
sudo mousepad /etc/apt/sources.list
for LinuxCNC/wheezy
or
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
for gnome based dists

i have upgraded to jessie to try linuxcnc_uspace but i can not find where rt-preemt kernel is .
I have installed linuxcnc_uspace from here
deb www.linuxcnc.org/ jessie base 2.7-uspace
deb-src www.linuxcnc.org/ jessie base 2.7-uspace
but where is the preemt rt kernel ?
ok i found it here
deb ftp.debian.org/debian jessie-backports main
but the jitter sucks with this kernel much worse than rtai
so we need linuxcnc with rtai kernel for jessie

How bad is the jitter with Preempt-RT?
It may be a lot less important than you think (unless you are doing software stepping)
