Any ideas?

Update to a newer Linux.

Updating Linux version is not an option at the moment.

Oh.

Why not?

The "10" in "10.04" means that is was released in 2010. It's a long way out of support.

It is an academic project. The machine is an industrial 3-axis mill. Unfortunately I cannot provide much details.

But from my understanding, updating Linux would require doing the machine setup again. A company was hired to do it for the first time. I don't believe I am apt to do it (I am a mechanical engineer and not so much of a computer guy, also this is my first experience with Linux )

As a counterpoint, the IT department of your institution might be unhappy to know that there is an unsupported OS in use.

You _should_ be able to copy the configuration straight across to a new LinuxCNC system. But it would probably be wise to do this with a completely separate PC if you can source one.

What about installing Python in an USB drive? Do you think that it would work?

I don't think that Python on a USB stick would help.

The problem is getting PySerial?

Be aware that 10.04 is so old that the software repositories might have been archived.

Setting up the system to search in the archive repositoeies might be the answer. There seems to be instructions here: www.stephenrlang.com/2017/03/setting-up-...ses-repo-for-ubuntu/
