Good questions thanks. The only information in the manuals is that they are permanent magnet servos. I find it difficult to beleive that a company like that would confuse resolvers for tachos or encoders. Especially as the same wiring diagram includes the Heidenhain encoder for the main spindle.
This is the view up under the lid of the Z axis motor.

that's an old kearfott singer resolver.....
then 1 wire is shared with one of the motor wires.

Judging from your photo I would say it's the same as these (Resolvers off of an ebay sale):

take a look at the granity argon drives. they are able to control brushed and brushless dc with resolvers. And have the advantage of direct 230V AC Power input.

Hmmm, that is a tasty solution. Keep the motor and their cables, but only need two drivers the size of paperbacks powered by single phase AC. They are pretty pricey, at €500 including VAT, but would save me a bunch of time mucking around with mounting replacement motors. WIth a hobby, is time save = money a thing?

hmm, i'm not shure if this resolver will work with todays servo drives.
There is less information in the web about this types. in other boards is written that this old ones have 2 input coils and one output coil, and were driven with an sin and cos signal.
todays resolvers have only on input, and coils for sin/cos output.
don't know if they could be driven backwards, I'm not old enough for such electro/magnetics stuff

You might actually want to inquire whether the 7i49 can actually handle this kind of "3-phase" resolver.
[edit]
I guess the proper term is "synchro resolver" or just "synchro"

I have used Argon drives on a Hurco retrofit, but not sure they had resolver support. It is mentioned that they will in the future, although all that is a bit foggy by now since that was several years back.
They are nice drives, but do have a very irritating issue, namely they use RS485 at very high speeds to program the drives and that link fails as soon as you enable the drive, so use shielded RJ45/STP cable, otherwise .....

They offer this widget to support resolvers.

Hm. But how are you going to connect your synchros to that?
[edit]
Maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree but your synchro seems to have 3phases at 120° and a "standard" resolver has 2 phases at 90°
