This is a fresh installation from LinuxCNC website.
But I downloaded  www.linuxcnc.org/iso/linuxcnc_2.9.7-amd64.hybrid.iso instead of provided  www.linuxcnc.org/iso/linuxcnc_2.9.4-amd64.hybrid.iso  by replacing 4 with 7 in the URL.

I am NOT running as root, because other commands require sudo.

Weird, the test/setuid in mesaflash is very basic:

    if (seteuid(0) != 0) {
        printf("You need root privileges (or setuid root) to access PCI hardware\n");
        return -1;
    }

No idea how that can not fail for a normal user...
