8i20 with 7i77/7i74 combo
If you can get one and figure it out it is great (I do have one) as it plugs straight into Mesa smart-serial and takes position commands from motion. HAL is as simple as:
net x-pos axis.0.motor-pos-cmd => hm2_5i25.0.stbl.0.0.pos-cmd
net x-fb axis.0.motor-pos-fb <= hm2_5i25.0.stbl.0.0.pos-fb.
Does your budget run to Granite Devices drives?

Granite devices only go up to 1.5kw, and at the same price as original drives or close..... 1,000.00 US.
/EDIT not actually 1000, more close to 600.00, still not in line with the project.

We have had a part kit waiting for the 3 phase bridge chips for months
(Onsemi took over Fairchild and some Fairchild parts had almost year lead times)

That's good news.
Is there any documentation on the 8C20?

I have to decide on something that i can use on other projects also, not just this one.

They do look promising for sure, and at 500 euro a piece i can live with that. Anyone here had any experience with them? I just need to know how reliable they are.

They only go up to 170v i think. The motors are 400 volts.

The motors should be around 300V, as that is roughly the DC voltage after rectifying in the drive.

I have 1.8KW motors. The Granite devices are 1.5, so I guess I would not be able to use them. I'll go with the 8i20's.

You might make them work and quite usable, but not to levels it was. I have 0.85KW motors so they should do just fine. Am placing an order for 3 or 4 of them tomorrow and wait a lot till they get here, as they have to go to Austria first and then here from Austria. Also coolers and a programing dongle. All that still under the price of a single used Yaskawa drive.
Now to find a decent spindle drive! Found an old Toshiba plain VFD ( no sensors, spindle orient, etc that the original has ) but for 750 euro for a 22KW spindle drive i think it is worth it. The only problem, original Yaskawa 200V 3phase, Toshiba 380V 3phase. Need to find out if the output voltage can be limited, otherwise i can not use it.
