7i76e why 24v? was created by Camren360
Hi all,

I am new to this whole process, but I have been doing a lot of review on setting up my Mesa 7i76e board, and I keep seeing that it should be powered by a 24v power supply. I was just wondering why?

If my Drivers are independently powered by a 36v power supply can I get away with just powering my board with 5v?

The only thing I am currently using my board for is Step/Dir, and Limit Switches.

I/O is typically 24vdc, encoders and step and direction signals are typically 5vdc and stepper drives are anything from 12v to hundreds of volts. IIRC the I/O needs 7v or something like that as a minimum (it's in the 7i76e manual).

Plus the higher voltage (24v) will make your system more immune to noise.

Update I used an ATX Power Supply to power the board with 12v and it is working just fine. I don't think noise will be too much of a factor. If it is then I will consider sourcing a 24v power supply. Ultimately what this allows me to do is mount the board inside my computer case, and run it off that Power Supply.
