Hi all

I am wondering whether anyone had thought about enhancing the fpga with a dedicated serial shift register Interface, eg to have a cheap way of connecting loads of buttons or lights to the Mesa without the need to buy the more expensive boards

A cheap board with four shift registers is about three or four Bucks!

Doing it via software would work and there is a component for that but it takes quite some runtime and is low update frequency.

For inputs you can use the inmux module. This uses external multiplexors
and has digital filter and MPG input options.

The behavioral module isn't too difficult, esp. with the inmuxm as you proposed as guideline, but embedding it into the hostmot2.vhd is quite a task. I have to see whether this is possible for me in a limited time, otherwise I will see whether I can life with a slower update rate and use a SW implementation and faster servo thread instead.
