I've had this discussion before, but never got a clear answer. What do I have to do to get the RS485 pins to work as a serial port for modbus? (TB2 pins 16 to 19) I'm thinking the 7i96 needs to be reflashed but where do I get the bit file?

You would need a bitfile that puts a UART module in the place of the smart-serial module.
But that is only part of the problem, as you then need a Modbus _hal_ driver to access the UART, it won't appear in /dev like a normal userspace UART.

I have a modbus hal driver that I wrote for a usb to modbus dongle that appears as /dev/ttyUSB0. I'm happy to share it with anyone who wants it. The problem is getting someone to tell me where to get the bitfile. I'm hoping one already exists as I don't have the tools required to make one.

I would think the most flexible way to do this would be to use PacketUART
firmware and build a driver for that using Curtis Duttons HAL_Port or similar
interface so you have real time access to a UART via hal pins.
This make the UART interface protocol agnostic.
Then a Modbus protocol component with a HAL_Port interface would be created
(possible just adapting existing Modbus code)
Unfortunately HAL_Port is missing any example code

you cited a couple files. My simple question is : where are they?

persei8, as i know, all prebuilt bitfiles for supported configurations is placed on mesanet site
www.mesanet.com/software/parallel/7i96.zip
Bitfile for uart configuration is included. Very intrested about your work, i think about the same, using a built-in rs485 for vfd is a very good option.

Thank you! The mesanet.com home page has no links to software. This was the missing info I needed.

store.mesanet.com has the software links for each card hidden in the "specifications" tab.
I don't know why they are there. It isn't an obvious place to look.
