7i92, can I use "STEP" outputs with no "DIR"?

The OP is using LinuxCNC 2.7.X and the old gantry component which
adds gantry capability to 2.7.X.

I suspect the gantry component does complicate the homing process.
Even though it may be a bit painful, I would suggest upgrading to 2.8 .
