I haven't purchased a 7i76 yet. It is something I am definately looking at after all the support I received on my brother tc-211 conversion.
I don't think I can get a rebate on the with out it (c10) but I can upgrade to any of there other cards.

Well ordering parts now. Just looking for one suggestion. I will have to make a spindle encoder (slotted disk style) just looking for some advice for which optical switches to use and how many I would need. 2 or 3. Some simple wiring info would also be great. For the disk I am planning on using a painted CD. 1/8 slots, one long for indexing. Thanks again to everyone.

Also looking for optical switches for limit switches. Using the s same for both would be great. (Less spare parts need)

For a lathe spindle you need 3 channels. You need the index for threading and the bidirectional counting for tapping (and a few other things).

Having been through the loop a few times I wouldn't bother trying to make an encoder any more. I have ended up with a commercial encoder driven by 1:1 gearing. You have the original back-gears to use. A small toothed belt drive will work too.

There are encoders on eBay for <$20. Make sure you get one with bearings and an index.

But if you do want to make your own, use the slot-type rather than the reflective type, and you probably want logic-output.

Steppers, drivers, Bob, vfd, limit switches all on the way. Just looking for tiMing pulled and belts. Anyone have a decent supplier for them. They have to fit nema 34 motors not the smaller 23. Any help would be appreciated. When everything gets here I'll send nice pics

Most of the toys are here :)

A few questions, i think I know the answers but still want to ask.

My kit included a c10 breakout board

www.automationtechnologiesinc.com/wp-con...oads/2012/02/C10.pdf

I was wondering if there is anyway to included a spindle encoder to this card or do I need something else.

The encoder I have is

www.cui.com/product/components/encoders/.../modular/amt10-v-kit

also wondering about adding in a vfd.

Thats it for now for the questions. I will post pics a little later.

and thanks again to everyone.

Any inexpensive ideas for replacements would also be great

You can count encoder pulses in software (ie, using the HAL "encoder" component. it may be that you run out of counting capability at high spindle speeds, but this might not matter as you only need the encoder when threading, which you do at low spindle speeds. (feed-per-rev mode will get a bit funny when the encoder gives up, too, but parts will still happen)

The encoder I have is
www.cui.com/product/components/encoders/.../modular/amt10-v-kit

I am not sure how you can mount that to the spindle. (I did say to get one with bearings....)[/quote]

also wondering about adding in a vfd.

Do that. When you have a VFD you can do constant surface speed turning, which works better (and removes more metal, faster)
You can hear my lathe doing the CSS thing in t his video

I have the vfd. Is it possible to integrate with this card. ??

The encoder does have some small plastic sleeve bearings. I know how I will hook it up already. just need to hook it up to the card. That is what I don't know how to do.

Yes. You just need something to convert a PWM to analogue voltage to give a speed command to the VFD.
You can make your own, here is one that worked well for me.

Or you can buy something:

Just connect the A B and Z outputs to three BoB inputs.

Ok 1st problem :(

I have linux hooked up thru a 5i25 mesa card to a c10 (see pic above) BoB.

I've run the stepconfig wizard on 1 axis to test everything.

I wired everything per the mfg. diagram
and when I try to move the axis I get no movement from the stepper.

Any ideas would be great

(I did stop the 5v pass trough on the 5i25. using an external power supply)

I am getting 72 volts for the main power.

Just no signal voltage when I activate the axis.

pdf location for the wiring.
