The Harmoic Drive "FHA" units are a servo motor, harmonic drive and crossed-roller ring assembled as an integrated unit.
They make perfect 4th and 5th axes. And are not _that_ expensive on the eBay market. But that's not a good source for a commercial product.
A working setup for the STMBL drive exists for them.
Oh, that looks interesting. I still have the AB Ultra 3000 drives which could run that assuming its a standard encoder. Do you have a link to the specs?
I assume that long shaft can be removed, or does it need to be cut off?

Looks like (that one in the ad) has a 1500 line encoder, and a... err.. 3015: 1 ratio? that's clearly not right. but its non standard. (not 50/100/160).

The shaft is part of whatever it was previously doing. They have a ring of threaded holes as the interface.
For machine tool use as a 4th axis the through-bore is a plus.

FHA25B has a standard encoder. I think that the 25C might have something different.
Some details on my build log. bodgesoc.blogspot.com/2017/05/harmonic.html
(Where I basically say "look for a B, or of you get a C, try to get the drive too")

Then you would have a good 100mm for clearance.for fixture and part.

The white is a laser cut plastic cover to keep everything out of the lower frame.

The Y saddle plate is the most expensive single part on the whole machine. Eek! It's complex, and also has to be precise and square. Its also machined for a 2" x 8"x 16" plate, so... I guess I cant complain.
I still will of course

I just made up an alternate Z to use my larger ISO30 spindle.
Benefits:
- I already own it so zero new dollars spent.
- It's here NOW. no waiting.
- It's got as much power as I want - 2.2kw on single phase, 4.6kw on 3 phase
- It has more low end, even when restricted sine it made full power at 12000rpm.
- Safely runs at 3000rpm.
- Electric fan, no water.
- It's iSO30, which makes buying tools easier
- It reaches the vac table fixture with short tools.
- Don't need to machine a $200 custom spindle mount.
- Can use a saw or right angle aggregate!
- Not "lightweight" - if I crash, the machine will break before it does.
Drawbacks:
- 14KG heavier than the Chinese 80mm spindle which will lower accelerations a little OR require a 750w X servo..
- If I *could* sell it fast, I would save $3000.
- ISO30 tools are both tall and large, limiting the tool tray size to 8 tools, and limited to about 5" guage. Larger tolls could be put in by hand though.
Hmm.

Its big, but, manageable maybe now. It is mounted 70mm(!!!) inward from where it was in the video with the new Z, and of course the machine itself is 10x stiffer.
Hmm..
