By far the simplest path is to use the Buster ISO:

So I've installed it, and installed network manager and uninstalled the WiCD but it wont recognize any wired connection? During installation it also mentioned: "Some of your hardware needs non-free firmware files to operate. The firmware can be loaded from removable media, such as a usb stick of floppy. The missing firmware files are: iwiwifi-3168-25.ucode iwiwifi-3168-24.ucode iwiwifi-3168-23.ucode" and during the rest of the installation it didn't setup any network, wired or wireless.

The pc I'm using: www.megekko.nl/product/2321/202588/Bareb...-0-69L-maat-pc-Zwart

Try editing the apt repository to include "non-free".

Either edit /etc/apt/sources.list directly or go to the repository settings in synaptic and add it there.
Code:
deb http://deb.debian.org/debian buster main contrib non-free deb-src http://deb.debian.org/debian buster main contrib non-free

Note that you probably do not want to enable the built in WIFI as they tend to be very bad for latency (a better choice is an external USB-->WIFI or USB-->Ethernet dongle)

The built in Realtek 8111 Ethernet is supported so should show up.

Okay so I gave it another go, I've got debian 10 buster from linuxcnc.org. did the network setup and pinged 10.10.10.10 response time was between .12 ms and .18ms
Now the problem is that mesaflash did not find my 7i97, I've got mesaflash version 3.4.0 prep
Anyone got an idea what I might be doing wrong?

Did you set mesanflash's address?

mesaflash --device ethernet --addr 10.10.10.10 --readhmid

Is that the latest mesaflash?, there was a version that had the 7I97 missing
(and you can always use --ethernet)
