Precise Z axis homing reference

Hi all,

I changed a bit my workflow due to the usage of a new GUI (Basic Probe), my new workflow require my machine to have a precise and consistent Z axis zero point.

ATM, I only have a small Omron tactile switch has it was just used as approx. boundaries.

What could I use to achieve a better axis homing ? IR Sensor ? Special tactile switch ?

Any recommandation that doesn't cost an arm and is easy to setup is welcome :)

Thank you.

What type of hardware do you have?

You could go with a more precision type of homeswitch like a metrol or something
Or do what real cnc machines do, and set the home using the encoder index channel

Ok thank you.

I think I am gonna look into precise switch because I know nothing about encoder...

I don't even know if my stepper have an encoder in them, I think it is optional (?).

I run closed loop 48v stepper with CL57T drivers on a Mesa 7ixx.

There are ways to use homing to index with an added
proximity switch that detects a flag on the stepper shaft.
(this does not require an encoder)

A flag on the shaft with a 1" radius will increase the homing
accuracy by a factor of about 30 (assuming 5mm/0.2" pitch
ballscrew and same linear and flag proximity switches)
