I'm planning a CNC conversion for my HF mill (40939).

Does LinuxCNC allow use of Raspberry Pies to read linear scales and drive steppers?

Yes, you can use a raspberry pi, but the results are typically not as good as with a conventional x86 PC motherboard, and the savings in space and money are not huge.
