After running into some issues with my cold when I migrated to 2.8 from 2.7, I decided to run through the Samples supplied in ncfiles directory to see what gives. The following files did not load correctly. I also supplied exact screen shots of each error.

b-index.ngc daisy.ngc nestedcall.ngc x-trim.ngc cone.ngc increment.ngc probe-hole.ngc

All the other programs at least loaded without error. I did not try to run any of them though.

Are you running the test files that have the "bad character" errors
on a hal configuration with A or B axis?

If not these are expected errors

You need to load the 9Axis Test Mashine to display multiaxis
G-code

OK, that for sure explains the "A" and "B" errors... thanks. In my code, I fixed the others that had the % issue by putting an M2 at the end of the sub.

As far as the error though, if the Axis isn't configured for an A or B code, then the message should be less cryptic, and SAY that the axis is not configured. You sure don't get that from the error message currently displayed.

This is what the "Daisy" program does:

I am very surprised that it needs an A axis, and the video does not use one.

"cone" is a specific demo for a 5-axis machine so needs A and B axes to exist.

The others seem, in many cases, to be subroutine files and probably are not expected to run standalone.

I agree, though, that "bad character" is an unexpected response to a request to use a non-existent axis.
