Well thanks to everyone it looks like I have it working.
After reading up on Parallel port addressing I think I understand it much better. There may be multiple base addresses each of which have 3 bytes per register line. Therefore 24 bits per line. I'm used to programming microcontrollers and haven't used parallel ports for IO.
Apparently according to the manufacturer each of these base addresses may be configured to drive different devices.
Anyhow, I'm getting on and off voltages on my x y axis step pins as I run a program. Looks to me like it should work when I hook up the steppers and drivers to the breakout board.
Appreciate your help.

Nice, if the voltage changes everything is working.
Find an IDC26 to DB25 pin cable if you want to use the second port, they are cheap and if you want good quality try www.mesanet.com or www.mesaus.com if you are in the USA or www.eusurplus.com if in Europe.
P.s.
I hope this is the right topic. :)

Right, was on the phone so missed it to the left! :)

More inputs or outputs, more stepgens or PWM or encoders or MPG ....
