in your hal file none of the halui.axis.L.select pins are connected to anything.
Example here for axis x, same for y,z,a,b :
net joint-select-x halui.axis.x.select

Yes in AXIS gui, halui.axis.L.select will not change the mark of the selected axis.
I'm not sure if there is another gui with axis selection as most seem to provide separate jog buttons for all active axes.

This should work for the AXIS GUI. Copy the attached file to your config directory then edit the INI file, in the [DISPLAY] section add:
This will change the axis selection on the 0 to 1 transition of any halui joint/axis select pin.
Code:
USER_COMMAND_FILE = axis_selection.py

What version of LinuxCNC are you running?
I just tried 2.8 on Buster and that works fine. I have test on 2.8, 2.9 and master.
Are you running it as a USER_COMMAND_FILE for the AXIS GUI in your INI file?
