I now know this from hal tutorials
loadrt threads name1=test-thread period1=1000000
but in my-mill.hal, I find this line to load the thread
loadrt [KINS]KINEMATICS
loadrt [EMCMOT]EMCMOT base_period_nsec=[EMCMOT]BASE_PERIOD servo_period_nsec=[EMCMOT]SERVO_PERIOD num_joints=[KINS]JOINTS
what the square brackets and what inside the square brackets mean.? I think they are constants to be retrived from the configuration I made in the stepconf wizard

Yes, those are constants from the .ini file.
Each LinuxCNC configuration consists of one
or more hal files and one ini file.
