I think because of the reduction you may have error before the encoder sees the next pulse, as it is not hooked to the motor.

You would have to overdrive the encoder to equal motor shaft revolutions

Its not Linuxcnc but Arduino and its only a stepper but I wrote the Arduino script for the indexer shown here. Scott used a prox sensor in place of the indexing button so he could wave a tool past the proximity sensor to index it. A better way would be to trigger a relay with an M code on some CNC controllers.

Un like a lot of others, this uses interrupt driven code and ramps acceleration up and down much like the way Linuxcnc does it.

I could find the script if you were interested.

Have you purchased the gearbox already?

There are harmonic drives reducers too with high reduction ratios too and very low backlash.

And some with a built-in servo and cross-roller bearings too.

The FHA-25 is basically a ready-to-go rotary axis.

One of these?

If so, before you do any conversion work in it, make sure that the worm engagement can be adjusted for very small backlash in the loosest spot whilst still being smooth and free in the tightest spot.
Mine was too inconsistent in that regard.

I personally don't think there is any benefit in the dealing with the backlash for a dividing head on a manual machine because you are not going to be using it for milling operations. For indexing, you just need to make sure that you only go in one direction which is the way we've used manual machines since they were invented. Then backlash does not exist.

It quite simple to mount a motor to one. Using mounting posts like this makes it very easy to align the motor.

you can do circular milling operations but on my 90:1 table the rpm maxes out at about 4 RPM so maybe a 40:1 is good for say 8-10 rpm

This is a mount for a spindle light for my Seig SX3 mill

The LED ring is for a headlight which we bought off eBay.
