If it is loose, tighten it.
Also check the play between pinion and gear rack.

Ok. Once I figure it out is that something that the linuxcnc can fix or is that a hardware fix?

Tom, Just curious, when does direct drive with steppers become unworkable? As in when do you need a reduction stage?

I second this question. I have also follow up questions: what is a reduction stage and what does this person mean when they say “unworkable”?

When I said unworkable I mean, as Tom posted in another thread that direct drive with a pinion gear will end up with around 100mm of travel per one revolution of the stepper motor which is too course.

I guess that comes down to pinion size and rack size but there must be a grey area where it works.

Also a reduction stage is where the stepper motor output is multipled by a gear ratio to give a increase in torque and decrease in travel per revolution. I have a 10:1 gearbox on my stepper motors so for one rotation of the stepper the pinion will move 1/10th of that.

Interesting. I don’t have a gear reduction box on my motors at all and I don’t seem to have a problem. I’m not using pinion gears though. Would the point of a gear reduction be for accuracy or so the motors don’t go too fast?

What are the specs of your motors?

With the gearbox, usually they are used for servos since servo motors have a specific RPM the work at best. The reduction box reduces the speed of the servo to something usable and they can also be used to increase the torque of the motor.
