Mint sure is a nice OS though.

Robert, that git error is strange as that is exactly what I typed today and it worked perfect. I took it from here:
linuxcnc.org/docs/2.8/html/code/building...cnc.html#Quick-Start

ON a bit of a google, the error is either from a proxy which can be fixed in the git config or the port git uses is closed.

[strike]Try port 80 like in the second line here:

linuxcnc.org/docs/devel/html/plasma/plas...tml#buildbot-install [/strike]

Well that was dumb, I am talking about the wrong thing...

Well, to me it isn't, there is just something about it...

For the record, installing from This Linux Mint PREEMPT_RT ISO and compiling Linuxcnc Master (V 2.9) from source took about 2 hours to end up where you were in your video.

Probably half that on a Devuan ISO.

Sorry for all the OT stuff Robert.

Too much Apple on the table at your place Phill. But yes I agree it is nice and smooth.

Back before the release of the stretch ISO, Mint was the preferred way to get PREEMPT_RT but you had to compile the kernel. The guys made me do it when I started when I knew no more about Linux than Robert does now! It took a few goes.. Once I got that far, I decided I might as well compile Linuxcnc from source which was a walk in the park by comparison... I do prefer the compiled from source run in place option.

I use only buildbot packages on my machines.

The machine PC's are used only for LinuxCNC so I don't need any of that pretty boy stuff.

I only use RIP in virtual machines for development.

That only works now there are buildbot versions for PREEMPT_RT. I think when I started there was a way to get PREEMPT_RT on Jessie I did get it working but my PC hardware was unusable due to awful latency so I bought a new USFF PC and I spent ages trying to get it running on Jessie but there was a lack of driver support for my hardware. Once I got to Mint, everything was plug and play, no driver headaches at all. So it just goes to show Mint is more than a pretty face!
