I have a Bridgeport V2xt cnc with inoperable boss controls. When I try to load it I get a hard disk drive error. I've decided not to throw any money at fixing the old control system as may be a rabbit hole. So I'm looking for assistance on starting a Linuxcnc conversion.
I may have missed it but wondering if there is any thread suggesting how to start a conversion. Like list of things to do before buying parts which turn out to be wrong.
I would like to reuse as much of the old equipment as possible. I'm guessing there is no simple Bridgeport BOB interface solution so assume I will need some sort of interface card. I am hoping I can use the old servo amps.
Really appreciate any guidance as this will be my first conversion and I have a larger bostomatic bd18 behind this one that will be much more complicated.

First stop is usually the servo amps. Are they analog input (ie 0..10V, -10..10V, ..) digital (pulse, direction) or serial interface.
Next stop is the feedback loop. Is the encoder, tach or resolver connected to the servo amp or to the controller.
This will then determine whether you can reuse the motor drives and whether you will need to deal with whatever feedback scenario you have on your machine.
Then you can start looking at interface hardware that can handle your machine.
Also check what kind of setup is used for the spindlemotor.

I really really wish I had any diagrams. Sadly everything I've found online suggested going to the yahoo V2xt user group. Thank you yahoo for making all this wonderful data go poof from the internet.

Here's a question
Do pins 3,4 on the 8 pin terminal go to a Tachometer?
If they do its likely similar to other Motion Science drives:
(1,2 +-10V analog, 3,4 Tachometer,5,6 current monitor and limit,7,8 drive enable)

Have you tried reaching out to Hardinge? I found them helpful with documentation. See if they can supply you with schematics for trouble shooting.

I contacted Harding but sadly they didn't get this series of Bridgeport. EMI has these machines. I've called and someone is supposed to call me but not real hopeful on getting schematics from them.
