may be you could use an board of the old control to interface the scales, like the others do with 3x exe board from the phillips control at old mahos.

the control has worked at ttl level, so there must be an part which converts 11ua to ttl....

The scales were directly connected to the Heidenhain 155 control, no box or card in between.

is there a way of find out how many increments the Z Axis encoder had?

TNC155, then you will need Exe Boxes. This unit could not be used for interfacing.

ROD456 5000 , should have 5000 periodes per turn.
If this is an 5mm ball screw, will give 0.001 scaling.

Thanks, that will help finde replacement. The Z Axis encoder is on an spur gear driving the quill (kind of rack and pinion), so I want at least the same resolution as the existing one. I guess I'll replace the scales and encoder.

Sorry I nissed that your control had intergrated A/D conversion.  Since two channels of my EXE were DOA, I bought replacement 601D EXE's off Ebay.de.They only cost about €60-80 per unit, and only need 5V, rather than 5V and 12V of the original. 

I never really worked out the model numbering, so I ended up with one returning the 1µm resolution same as the original. The other one ouputs 5µm resolution. Doesn't make any difference in practice to what I use the MAHO for so far.

there ist nothing you have to apologize for.

There are three boxes on ebay for 75€ each.
Cables cut, so I would need to open and rework them. I guess 1F is 5 µm and 5F 1 µm but it's just a guess when the numbers are for the interpolation.
Using them would be cheaper, not sure if quicker, cause I have to redo the connectors from the encoders and rewire the boxes.
Still not really sure what to do.
Change to TTL scales / Encoder oder buying AD boxes.
Changing is roughly triple the cost compared to the AD Boxes.
Which now kicks me to the AD boxes.
Cause the new spindle motor wasn't cheap.

EDIT: F*** it, I bought two of these things for a special deal. This way I can have a look at X and Y an test Z. For U then O can see If I change the encoder or by a third AD box. same for the A-Axis but that for later anyway

not much but, I opened them, they look quite nice.

just to figure out, that I ran out of cable now need to wait for some to arrive. With some luck in can look at it on the weekend.
Also need to think about where to lace the boxes, cause the encoder cables are to short to lay it on the bottom.
I should be able to reroute them and make new entry point in the cabinet.

I also have two stand alone boxes and one original EXE channel in operation. I barely notice that one axis has only 5µm resolution, since I only touch off to Hundredths. I have no real expectations of being able to do anything to µm tolerance.
