5i24 substitute using ethernet?

Hi Peter.

I am currently running a 5i24x16 via PCI, and via 50 pin headers to various 7i44, 7i47S, 7i29's (x2).

As PC's with PCI slots slowly get rarer, is there a card which can replace the 5i24 using Ethernet BUT has 50 pin headers the same as the 5i24 so that I can future proof the machine in case the current PC goes down?

I understand the kernel needs updating for Ethernet functionality (I have other machines using 7i76e's), but beyond this is there a board which would fulfill an Ethernet to 3x 50 pin header role to replace the 5i24 without needing to replace the existing downstream cards (7i44, 7i47S, 7i29) if necessary?

Many thanks,
Marty.

Read p on the 7i80HD-16. looks like it will do. Its ethernet and has three 50 pin headers.

Yes, a 7I80HD-16 should be a pretty much direct replacement for a
5I24 or 6I24

Thanks Peter.

I will go ahead and order one of these and I have two questions in that regard:

1. With the 5i24 I currently have it is flashed with:
5i24_16_svss8_8 firmware.
I am hoping it is not too problematic to create the same firmware config for the 7i80HD-16? Or indeed it may already exist??
Just tried to take a look at www.mesaus.com/software/parallel for .bit files and the page was not found. Have the flash/.bit files been migrated elsewhere?

2. Syntax. Aside from installing the required kernel for ethernet, just confirming that in basic terms, the main changes to the HAL file to go from the 5i24 to the 7i80 is both the preamble to include the IP address, (this example taken from a 7i76e lathe I have and thus default IP address will likely be different):

loadrt hm2_eth board_ip="10.10.10.10" config=" num_encoders=8 num_pwmgens=5 sserial_port_0=200xxx"

and essentially "find and replace" all references from 5i24 to 7i80 e.g.
from say:
hm2_5i24.0.7i84.0.0.input-24
hm2_5i24.0.encoder.01.position
hm2_5i24.0.pwmgen.00.value

to:
hm2_7i80.0.7i84.0.0.input-24
hm2_7i80.0.encoder.01.position
hm2_7i80.0.pwmgen.00.value

Just wanting to confirm that given the similarities between the cards, the changes to migrate are essentially as listed above.

Thanks,
Marty.

www.mesanet.com/software/parallel/7i80.zip
svss8_8 seems to be there (7i80hd_16_svss8_8.bit)

And yes, to change cards you basically just fix the driver line
and globally replace the old card name with the new one

This seems to be borrowing trouble from the future. It isn't like the PCI slots in your current PC are going to disappear one day.
And there is the 6i24 until the day that PCIe disappears. This is a direct plug-in replacement for 5i24 and uses the same firmware.

He asked for an ethernet card. But thanks, I was looking for that card.......

Hi Peter.

Sorry, I had a brain malfunction.

The 5i24 bit file I am running is:
5i24_16_svssst4_8_4_7I47s.bit
which I verified via mesaflash with the 5i24 in place.

Had a look but none for the 7i80hd 16 firmware in the download that I could see.

To be clear currently, 4 servos XYZA (pwm) and Spindle analogue via 7i47s.
1x 5i24_16 via the 3 50 pin headers to 7i29 (two on one cable), 1x 7i44 and 1x7i47s. The 7i44 in turn runs 3x 7i84 via ss.

Currently running 5 encoders (4 via the 7i29 input [enc 00,01,02,03] and one (spindle enc 04) via 7i47s) but in toto I need 8 encoders (linear with rotary),so just confirming that is still the case (still 3 free encoder slots remaining on the 7i47s, enc 05, 06, 07??).

Can I confirm the nomenclature:
sv = servo
ss = standard serial
st = ??
and the numbers of each (the order) I am guessing at:
4 pwm servo
8 encoders
4 ??
and 7i47s functionality??

So, in short, is it possible to get the 7i80hd version of the 5i24 firmware please?
Thanks,
Marty.

The correct firmware will hopefully resolve why I am getting ".....pin# not found" in the debug.

Interestingly, even though I can ping and flash the 7i80 quite successfully, also in the debug I get:
sysctl: cannot stat /proc/sys/net/ipv6/conf/eth0:avahi/disable_ipv6: No such file or directory
This is with Deb 9 with preempt kernel per Linxcnc downloads page.
Hoping this is just a formality and I am communicating with the card via ipv4??

Thanks,
Marty.

I think that avahi error means some kind of host network setup error (I've seen this before but I cannot remember the exact cause) It was fixable with the network manager or the interfaces file

I can't seem to find the pin file for svssst4_8_4_7I47s, can you read out the pin file from the 5I24 as a reference?
