Which Linux?

Which Linux? was created by sajurcaju
I just got my router working early this summer. I used the live install disk, which gave me Ubuntu 10.04 and LinuxCNC 2.5. I have since updated it to 2.6.9.

When I update now (like adding Caffeine), I get a popup that says my OS is no longer supported. This is pretty annoying because I cannot get rid of the popup. The larger issue is whether I should migrate to a more recent version of Ubuntu, or switch to Debian. Using an OS that is still supported sounds like a good plan.

Which OS should I use? Is there any significant difference? Almost all of my use will be LinuxCNC. Do I need to change OS?

I am running on a Dell Optiplex 360, 2G ram, dual boot with Win 7.

Thanks,
Steve

Same thing came up on my system this weekend.

Good luck - I was never able to the "jitter" down on newer version to be anywhere close to what I have now.

I sure hope there is a more straightforward answer to this question now then what I was able to get! I would love to upgrade but I am not a Linux "guru" and it seems that's what it takes! I am running a 6i25 into a G540 with a pendant and that was a real trip getting it all set up - something I dread having to have to figure all out again!

upgrade to the Hybrid iso that will give you version debian 7 Wheezy , along with linuxcnc 2.6 etc
just make a backup of your linuxcnc configs folder , then you can copy it back

www.linuxcnc.org/binary.hybrid.iso

although you'll probably have to update it to 2.6.9 , but the updates preceeding install should sort that

you probably wont see any major differences , however future updates will be easier

I ended up going with Debian, but am trying the latest LinuxCNC:
www.linuxcnc.org/docs/2.7/html/getting-s...cha:getting-linuxcnc

Installation was pretty straightforward, but you have to do it from either a USB stick or DVD (1.1G won't fit on a CD). You have to format the media for boot; I used rufus.

Besides using a current OS, I have another problem with the computer freezing--only power on reset will get it back. I had the screensaver and power management set right, had caffeine installed, to no avail. Lots of things are blamed for this problem (search for "ubuntu 10.04 freezing") including the kernel and video card. Looks like mine isn't the kernel, it still freezes (but it took longer). I've got a video card on order to replace my onboard video. We'll see what happens.

linuxcnc is not part of any debian repro or any other , you need to install separately
it is not included as a package

install instructions are shown under the download tab

you can install linuxcnc under Debian Jessie
at this time under debian jessy your required to use rt-preempt as your realtime and not rtai as is normaly used in the live install image
so you have a little more work .

I am in a similar situation.

I have 10.4 LTS and Axis 2.5.4-64-g28ebd43

I am happy with things as they are now but get that Ubuntu release is not supported message (which you can close by closing the tab on the lower left of the screen)

I would appreciate any advice about if I should update or not.

I see that some others are having problems after 2.7 update, but have not had time to read them all in depth yet.

I'm thinking if it isn't broken don't fix it, but I still have some things that I would like to improve that might be easier with a newer version.

FWIW, it isn't empty any more.
