I reinstalled stretch, updated repositories, updated "interfaces" (updating address and nixing last line). I setup a network connection for the card that it won't recognize/connect to.
hm2_eth: rtapi_app_main: connection refused (-111)
./Plasma.hal:8: waitpid pailed /usr/bin/rtapi_app hm2_eth
./Plasma.hal:8: /usr/bin/rtapi_app exited without becoming ready
./Plasma.hal:8: insmoid for hm2_eth failed, returned -1

What IP address is the 7I92 set for?
W5,W6=down,down = 192,.168.1.121
W5,W6=down,up = 10.10.10.10
What does "ip a" report?

the 7i96 is pinned out to 10.10.10.10
W5 = Down W6 = up
computer shows it trying to connect to board under my network configuration, but ultimately times out; related?

Right, so enp5s0 is not set-up properly (no IPV4 IP address)
so it looks like there's an error with the interfaces file or your edits did not take for some reason
You might try setting this up with the network manager GUI instead

Okay, I'll give that a try. One thing, I have no clue where to start.
Or should I go back into the the interfaces file and add in the final script?
Best I understand is to go about it like this VVVV
Nano /etc/network/interfaces
allow-hotplug enp5s0
iface enp5s0 static
adress 10.10.10.10
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.1.254

gateway should be 10.10.10.1
Use network manager at the top right, click on it , go to edit settings and there double click on wired connection eth1 or similar. Go to IPV4 tab, choose manual instead of automatic, click on add, put in the numbers as below
ip 10.10.10.12
netmask 8
gateway 10.10.10.1
dns 10.10.10.1
close and apply
clock on network icon again, go to wired connection and click on it.
Now it should connect and work properly, if it does not, read this again.

Here are detailed instructions for general Debian network setup:
wiki.debian.org/NetworkConfiguration#Con...e_interface_manually
You can also use the GUI (little icecream bar looking icon on the top right of the screen)
Also tommylights IP address notes are correct, the 7I96 card is at 10.10.10.10 so the host has to be at a different address (but in the same 10.10.10.X subnet)

LMAO, I would be so annoyed right now if it wasn't for the fact that it just started right up without any errors.
Just needed to change that ip address. I had thought network manager and connections were different.
Sweet, just need to setup the HAL for proma and relay.

Yeesh. I need to modify the Toma plasma setup to work with my mesa board. Is this a process of changing directories and files? i.e. put the Toma files into my 7i96 directory, keeping my .ini and .hal from the 7i96 and updating them with the information from the Toma files?

You just need to replace the paraport pins to mesa pins in the toma files, example :
net StepX stepgen.0.step => parport.0.pin-02-out
net DirX stepgen.0.dir => parport.0.pin-03-out
to
hm2_7i96.0.stepgen.07.xxxxxxxx <===== ??? do not know what goes here, PCW, helppppp !
Also the inputs and outputs should be changed accordingly.
