The really sad part is that other countries will look at it as a template for how to do things. I have noticed
how little value most governments seem to place on their citizens. Oh they will say one thing, but what
they do is what truly matters. Just another example of George Orwell's AnimalFarm
"All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others"

But what do I know.

And yet more. call it rage bait if you want. Remember this isn't just about 3D printers  it concerns ANY machine Additive
or Subtractive.

Important to remember this is JUST rage bait, and not real.
They literally aren't banning anything, they are proposing a restriction that is not workable even if it got passed, which it won't.

Should you be concerned at their lack of knowledge to understand their own laws? Yes. Should you be concern this will somehow impact your printers or CNC's? No. Should you be concerned this will make linuxcnc disappear? No. That's literally not even possible.

You need educate your local government if you see bills pop up like this, they are clearly clueless. Responding as if this is an existential threat though is just being as silly as they are and not in the least bit helpful.

My opinion is that this proposed law is SO dumb that it is hiding something else. Follow the money as they say. Who benefits from this? It's not gun safety advocates.

If you think this is on one hand not real and unworkable, but one the other hand suspect that they are "hiding something else" - What do you have in mind that they (whoever that is) want to achieve?

The dangerous precedent here is that one unelected official is given the power to do everything so there is a hidden transfer of control away from elected officials.... so it will be expanded. Fortunately, it has been banished to a committee from which it will likely never emerge...

At least in Australia all this is illegal now. You can't make firearms parts without an armourer's license... Maybe our overregulation will save us.

This is the valid way to go I think. You cant make a weapon of a certain type without a license. Get caught, go to jail.

The printing thing is just a kneejerk: "omg you can make the guns cause of this new fangled machine... from 1986". You could always make guns off the radar. Yes, printing an unregistered weapon is certainly easier today than it was yesterday, but I don't really think the rules change here. Punish the people who commit the crimes, not everyone who doesn't.

This is also different from a lot of other dubious new efforts to control internet consumption for example. Printers literally CAN'T be controlled any more than a soup spoon. You can certainly harass buyers of brand new consumer printers, but that wont have any impact on making weapons.

As it relates to us CNC people, here is how the dual use laws have played out - a far more serious set of laws.  I cannot buy a VFD over 599hz because all the manufacturers have applied the law to their products due to the dual use export restrictions.... In canada. So I bought my VFD from vietnam. Yup... real good law there. Literally does nothing. zero, nada except annoy people that want high speed CNC spindles. I get the reason for the law too, and I even agree with the principle... but the implementation is utterly useless. You still need to track all your illegally exported goods the exact same way as before. You gained nothing you wanted from this law. (on a VFD, other items on the dual use list are more realistically managed)

And even if it doesn't go anywhere this time governments will continue to try again. It's how the American
Government has gotten away with mandating kill switches into all new road vehicle
(2026 forward if I remember correctly). There is another bill that is suppose to repeal it (H.R. 1137) but
I don't know if it passed or not. Given all the other crap that has gone on I wouldn't be surprised if it
got lost in the noise.

As a side note from an earlier post, NO they have not repealed the stupid vehicle kill switch thing. It's just
the law hasn't been implemented yet.

Youtube isn't all bad. As a newly minted but not yet monetized Youtube Partner, I got an email from them today reminding me of the copyright match tool I was now allowed to use. So I turned it on in YT studio and low and behold there was a match where somebody made a video using 90% of my content. A video of my Spaceship Plasma cutting a part (well lots of parts). They had been selling off my video for  four years!

I decided to play nice and asked YT to serve them a 7 day take down notice, instead of an immediate takedown.

Last time I had something similar was a large company using my registered trademark running Google ads for my product! That time I had to pay a specialist IP lawyer to issue a takedown request which cost me quite a few $ and Youtube is doing it for free!.
