On the lower left, the status bar will always show what you have selected, like path/group/object etc.
For LinuxCNC always use PATH and always set to mm (or inch) in the upper bar where dimensions are set.
If the selected object is Group, you need to ungroup it to edit, select UnGroup from the Object menu.
If if it a complex path made out of a lot of paths but it is a single piece, select Break Apart from the PATH menu.
objects can be transformed to path from the Path>object to path
Pictures and drawings can be traced with Path>trace bitmap.

Thanks Tommylight, i used the "object to path" function then i was able to edit this path.
