Where to start? was created by Antscran
Hi all,

Currently on a course for microcontrollers and electronics, we use a milling machine to prototype PCB's and thought it would be very cool to own one myself. A teacher mentioned LinuxCNC and so here I am, trying to find out where to start!

Basically I would like to build a 3 axis milling machine for PCB prototyping, and after any advice on what to read and how best to approach this?

Best regards,

Ant

You can start here...

And take a look at the getting started guide.

Do you have a mechanical design in mind?
It might be easier (and possibly even cheaper) to buy a pre-build machine. However this is less fun if you fancy the idea of designing and building your own machine.

As a random example.

Where I start is to define the scope of the machine then determine if you want to build your own (having access to a mill helps here) or purchase something ready made. If your only wanting to do PCB's something light would do the job but if you also want to mill metal then you need a lot more mass to do that.
