Turns out the first MPG could not take 24v despite what was printed on the silk screen a new one was installed and hooked up to 5v and now works perfectly.

Replied by maxguapo on topic Debugging MPG and Mesa 7C80
Hi, I struggled around the last few days with an mpg-pendant and the Mesa 7C80. The .hal and .ini files in the previous posts where very helpful in setting up the configuration for a lathe. Unfortunately the mpg did not work proper from the files. I dived in to the manual (something one always should do first ) an found a note, that the input pins 0 to 7 of the TB1 are also capable for the input of four mpg's. I hoked up the mpg outputs A+/B+ to the inputs 0 an 1 and in the hal I put the following lines to detect the pulses:
# The MPG inputs
net encoder-counts <= hm2_7c80.0.inmux.00.enc0-count
It's very simple and it worked from the beginning.
The mpg is powered wit 5V and the + of the power source is connected to TB2_0.
In the attachment you find the full file and I hope it helps with the 7C80 and an mpg.
Regards, Peter
