The advice I copied/pasted was to connect the VFD DCM terminal to the PC 0V. One good reference at the PC end would be the USB shield.

Hello andypugh
I have connected the USB shield of the PC to the VFD DCM terminal but no more success. I also went to the PC's power supply to find the GND that goes to the motherboard to link it to the VFD DCM without any more success.

In my favorites, I found the link to the tutorial I had followed to start the VFD buildyourcnc.com/FAQ/13272  and I recreated a new configuration by following the sequence step by step.
I always get the same error:

ERROR communication time out (-12)
read_setup: FAILED
error reading setup from VFD, retrying
read_setup: reading setup parameters:

query length = 6
hycomm query = [01] [01] [03] [05] [00] [00] [2C] [4F]
query_ret = 8
response_lenght_computed = 8
waiting for message (8 bytes)...
WAIT_DATA(): comms time out

It's tearing out what little hair I have left in my head!

I guess we are coming to the end of this troubleshooting unless you have any other leads or ideas where to direct me.
If that is the case, I think I'll have to find an old PC with a parallel port to install LinuxCNC and recreate a configuration.
I curse the loss of power to the VFD in the middle of the machining process!

In any case, I thank you a lot andypugh for your precious help, the time you spent with me and the knowledge you kindly shared.

I don't see a parallel port helping here. Unless you are hoping that a PC swap will fix the problem (And I see no reason to expect it to).

Why not switch ti running the VFD with analogue voltage control?

I am wondering if you have one of the fake HY VFDs?

You could draw a matrix of all the possible VFD settings (including the jumper position and comms wire polarity) and all the hy_vfd settings and just work through them methodically. You can cycle through the hy_vfd settings pretty quickly using the halrun command-line.

Of course, this might just be a long-winded way to prove that it doesn't work.

Thanks andy, I'll take your advice and start this long term check.
One thing comes to mind... wouldn't the wild swapping of the hard drive I did compromise an execution address?
Is it worth trying with a LinuxCNC live CD first ?

I really don't think so, the hy_vfd component runs in user space. If it runs at all, it should work. Running it from the halrun command line takes most of LinuxCNC out of the picture.

Great so I'll try the complete check up then.
I'll come back here to expose any progress.
