Can't get the damn scale right! was created by AudioRuso
I've been busting my head all day and maybe (I hope) I am missing something. I set up the wizzard to the best of my knowledge. It seems like the only parameters that should affect the scaling of the machine would be the Pulley Teeth and the Leadscrew Pitch..... I do not have a pulley in my machine so I put 1:1 ratio and then I know that my leadscrew has 18 threads in an inch so this is what I set my leadscrew setting to....
I tried to play with other things and no matter w hat I do it seems that my scale is WAY off.... I tested with a 12 inch long line.... and in the end I got an inch.....
I also tried to do a really slow step rate so I am sure not to skip any and both fast and slow rates the results are the same; the motor turns smooth and I cannot hear any steps being skipped.....
Am I missing something? Thanks for help in advance!

You probably are missing the microsteps on your motor drivers.
What kind of motor drivers are you using?
(common values are usually: 2,4,8,16, etc - maybe 16 is close to what you're needing)
Regards,
Alex

Hey thanks for your help guys, I am using some old Vexta model C4398-9012.
So far I tried 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 for microstepping with no luck. The only thing that works is 1. I'll try 16.

Uhm let me correct myself.... I tried microstepping some more and was able to get it to work fine with 2, ok with 4 and then at 8 it actually seems like it's the right scale but even at 0.1 inch per sec it skips steps. I'm going to p lay with settings some more.

If you think your loosing steps then you might try lowering the acceleration.
There is some troubleshooting ideas here:
www.linuxcnc.org/docview/html//common_St...gnostics.html#r1_3_1
I could not find your controller with a google search. If you have any documentation on the drive it should tell you the micro steps and timing info you need to configure with. If you can jump over to the IRC while your at your machine someone might be able to help.

Thanks for the info John, Unfortunately it's not missing steps when it accelerates but rather while already in motion... I can hear it doing so and also see it. I got it working pretty well right now but I'll keep tinkering with it and wait for that link to work again for some reason I can't open it (in fact none of t he docs at all)

If your having to guess at things try increasing your step time and step space to 20000 and see how it works. If you find the numbers that work well you can add them to the wiki site.

please forgive the thread-jack but this is the only place i can find any search hits on the Vexta C4398-9012 stepper motor.
I have 3 of these motors (see attached image), that I picked up from surplus cheap. I'm looking for driver information. I called Oriental Motors and all they could tell me was that it was a custom make for Intermec (guessing for a barcode label printer).
this motor has four wires, yellow, red, white and blue. the label says
2-Phase,
1.8 degree/step,
dc 8.5v, 0.56A
Xu7 11122
My hopes are to make a dremel mini cnc for drilling pcb's. I could sure use some pointers. TIA.
